PFM

PFM

PFM stands for Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal, a type of dental restoration that combines the strength of metal with the natural appearance of porcelain. In PFM crowns or bridges, a metal substructure is created to fit over a prepared tooth, providing stability and durability. This metal foundation is then covered with layers of dental porcelain, which mimics the translucency and color of natural teeth.
PFM restorations are known for their strength, making them suitable for withstanding the biting forces in the posterior (back) teeth. The metal substructure ensures durability, while the porcelain overlay achieves a more natural appearance, blending seamlessly with adjacent teeth.
While PFM crowns have been a standard choice in dentistry for many years, the development of all-ceramic materials has led to increased use of metal-free options for improved aesthetics. However, PFM restorations continue to be a reliable choice, particularly in situations where durability and strength are paramount, such as in the molars.
